Chapter 1 God Rested and So Should You

The Sabbath Is Built Into Creation The Sabbath is not primarily a command. It is a pattern. Before Moses, before the law, before the covenant at Sinai — God rested on the seventh day. He hallowed it. He set it apart. He declared it good. Rest was written into the fabric of creation before the first human being ever needed to obey anything. When the fourth commandment is given in Exodus 20, the rationale is not efficiency. It is not productivity management. It is creation theology: "For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy." You are being invited to imitate God. To build your week around the same rhythm He set at the very beginning — six days of work, one day of rest. Not as a religious obligation but as a participation in the created order. "So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation." — Genesis 2:3 God did not rest because He was weak. He rested because rest is good. He calls you to the same — not because you are weak, but because rest is good for you too.
