Chapter 4 Movement and Exercise for Busy Pastors

Why Pastors Don't Exercise The reasons pastors give for not exercising are usually versions of the same reason: not enough time. The schedule is full. The demands are constant. Something always needs to be done, and spending 45 minutes running seems like a luxury compared to the urgent needs in the congregation. This calculus is wrong. Exercise is not a luxury. It is a performance enhancer for every other demand on your schedule. A pastor who exercises regularly will have more energy, better focus, more emotional resilience, and a longer ministry than one who doesn't. The question is not whether you have time. It is whether you have decided that it matters enough to protect time for it. Starting Small, Starting Now You do not need a gym membership or a training plan to begin. You need a consistent habit. Start with 20 minutes of walking, three times per week. That's it. That is enough to begin seeing the physical and cognitive benefits of regular movement. Find activities you actually enjoy. Pastors who are doing exercise they hate will stop doing it as soon as the initial motivation fades. Walk, bike, swim, lift weights, play sports with your kids — find something that fits your personality and build from there. Accountability helps here more than almost anywhere else. A friend, a colleague, or even a congregation member who exercises with you dramatically increases the likelihood of consistency. You will show up for someone else when you would not show up for yourself. The best exercise routine is the one you will actually do. Stop looking for perfect. Start with something.
