How to Find Your Own Identity Separate From Your Ministry Role
The pastor who has no identity outside their role is the pastor most at risk when the role is threatened. Developing a self that exists independently of the position is a form of pastoral health.
For the Ministry Spouse: You Are Not an Extension Your identity is not derived from your partner's role. You are a child of God, gifted and called in ways that may or may not find their primary expression in the church your partner leads. Your faith journey is yours. Your spiritual gifts are yours. Your calling — whatever form it takes — belongs to you. Recovering or establishing that sense of individual identity is one of the most important things a ministry spouse can do — for themselves, for their marriage, and ultimately for the ministry. The spouse who is secure in who they are apart from the pastoral role can engage the ministry with freedom rather than resentment. Practically: pursue the interests, gifts, and relationships that belong to your own life, not just the ministry's. Study what you want to study. Develop what you want to develop. Build friendships that are yours, not the congregation's. Have a spiritual director or counselor who is yours, not the church's. "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." — Ephesians 2:10 Ministry spouse: you are not a supporting role in someone else's calling. You have your own. Find it. Invest in it. Let it be yours.
